Have you ever bothered to buy one of the amaryllis bulbs that are found everywhere during the holiday season? Or have you been lucky enough to receive one? It might sound funny, but to me it’s one of the really fun gifts that you can get or give during this time of year.
First of all it grows faster than anything you have ever experienced. You leave for work and it seems to have grown almost an inch by the time you return. It truly is the fastest growing thing that I have ever seen.
If you haven't had one before here is a picture of what it looks like when it comes out of the box:
Pretty plain and unassuming. You are given a compressed soil disk and get that going by soaking it in lukewarm water, and when it’s saturated, you simply place the bulb in the pot that's provided. Then when it starts growing (like a Jack and the Beanstalk plant), you simply water and wait and within a few weeks it turns into stalks with large beautiful flowers. The bulbs come in a variety of colors.
Here is a picture of it about two weeks later:
Best of all it takes so very little effort on your part. Plus it will grow again the following year with a few easy steps. However since I might not even remember where I stored it after the holiday season, I would rather just get a new one.
You can pick them up for as little as $6 and the more exotic ones cost more of course. There is lots of information online, but you won’t need it. Just pick one up.
Now I have to go and watch mine grow!
