This month is named after the grandnephew of Julius Caesar - Augustus Caesar.

The birthstones for August are the Peridot, Sardonyx, and the Spinel.

-Peridot is the rare gem-quality form of the mineral olivine that appears in various shades of green, sometimes with a brown or yellow tinge. Called “evening emerald,” the peridot was often mistaken for emeralds. It is associated with prosperity and good fortune. Peridot is formed deep inside the earth’s mantle and is brought to the surface by volcanoes. Peridot is also found inside meteorites. In Hawaii, peridot symbolizes the tears of Pele, the volcano goddess of fire who controls the flow of lava.

-Another birthstone for this month is Sardonyx. Although it can appear in several colors, it is usually red and white. It is thought to bring courage, happiness, and clear communication

-The Spinel is a third birthstone in August and is often mistaken for either a ruby or a pink sapphire, as it can resemble either. In fact, some of the most famous rubies in history have turned out to be spinel. Vivid red is the most desirable color of spinel gemstones, followed by cobalt blue, bright pink, and bright orange. The more affordable gemstones are often those with paler colors, like lavender. You may also find spinel in black, violet blue, greenish blue, grayish, pale pink, mauve, yellow or brown.

The zodiac signs for August are Leo (July 23 - August 22) and Virgo (August 23 - September 22).

The birth flowers for August are the Gladiola which represents remembrance, calm, integrity, and infatuation. They also indicate that the heart is being “pierced with love.”

The other flower is the Poppy. A red poppy signifies pleasure; a white poppy is given for consolation; and, a yellow poppy wishes wealth and success.
