One of my grandmother’s favorite movies from the 40’s starred Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer with a small part played by Angela Landsbury. For those who have not seen the movie it’s about a man who is trying to drive his new bride insane by messing with her memory. He wants to search her childhood home for expensive jewels that might have been hidden there by her dead aunt. I don’t want to give too much away so I'll stop there.

Anyway the movie was called "Gaslight" and our family has always used the term gaslighting when someone was trying to tell us something that we couldn’t quite remember. So imagine my surprise when I was watching the news the other day and there was an author on who has written a book about gaslighting! It turns out that it is a somewhat common occurrence used by people who want to control someone, and there are tons of references about it online. (And here we thought that we were being so clever using that term.)

If you haven’t seen the movie and don’t mind watching a black and white film, I recommend it especially as the weather gets cooler and you need a binge movie day. Come to think of it, I haven’t seen the movie in a few years, so I’ll also put it on our list for one of those lazy days that we all need!
