I don’t even remember how I first happened upon this new age health thing called a salt cave but it was about 15 years ago – and I’m glad that I did. (Although it’s not new age in other parts of the world. For example Eastern Europe has been using this practice since the 19th century.)

If you have never gone before, I’ll explain it. It’s a room filled with tons and tons of Himalayan Salt both on the floor, where it’s loose and crunchy, and on the walls, which seem to be made with bricks of it. You recline on a zero-gravity chair and are given a blanket because the temperature is a bit lower than a normal room, plus you are so relaxed that your blood pressure normally drops a bit.

No cell phones are allowed so that is a plus for most people. The quiet of not hearing anyone speak for about 45 minutes, nor anyone able to reach you for that time, is a definite bonus. Only the sound of soft music or chimes is playing in the background.

Salt is known to have healing properties. Trace minerals like calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, iodine, bromine, copper, selenium, and iron are absorbed by both the skin and your lungs, which can help clear pollens, viruses, toxins, and other pollutants from the body, and also help reduce inflammation. It is said to improve respiratory ailments like asthma too.

Additionally, the salt generates negative ions which help purify and balance your body’s ration of negative to positive ions. The effect is apparently similar to how rejuvenated you feel after spending time near an ocean. One hour in a salt cave is said to equal about a day at the beach although some experts feel it equals much more. We all know how great we feel after spending a day near the water.

Salt is a natural anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antimicrobial, so the benefits the cave promotes are not a huge shock to those informed about it’s healing powers.

Most of us are not lucky enough to spend enough time by the ocean, so why not try something – at least once - that makes you feel that same way, and it takes so much less time and money. As Martha would say “It’s a good thing.”
